Text compare & diff checker

Paste or open two versions of a text and see every added, removed and changed line, highlighted down to the word or character. Ignore case, whitespace or blank lines, jump between changes and export a patch.

Stays on your device

Both texts are compared in your browser and never uploaded or stored. Only your view and option choices are remembered.

Line, word or character

Lines are matched first, so inserted or deleted lines don't throw everything after them out of line. Changed lines are then compared word by word or character by character.

Patches that apply

The unified diff is made from the exact texts, ignoring the ignore options, so git apply and patch accept it.

Questions

Is my text uploaded?

No. The comparison runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. A share link stores both texts in the part of the URL after #, which browsers don't send to servers, but anyone with the link can read them.

How does the comparison work?

Lines are matched with a diff algorithm (the jsdiff library), so moved or edited lines line up where they belong. Lines that changed are then compared word by word or character by character to highlight exactly what's different.

Can it ignore whitespace or letter case?

Yes. Ignore case, ignore whitespace changes, ignore blank lines and ignore line-ending differences (Windows vs Unix) can be combined. The original text is always shown; the options only change what counts as a difference.

How large can the texts be?

Comparisons run in a background worker so the page stays responsive. Very large or very different texts take longer; if a comparison runs past the time limit it is stopped and you're told.

Can I export the differences?

Yes. Copy or download the result as a unified diff (.patch) that git apply and patch understand, or copy either text.
